Tox Free Living

Would you like to know more about what’s in some of your favourite personal care and cleaning products?

Many of the products we use every day to clean our homes and care for our bodies are designed to make life easier, smell pleasant, and look appealing.

However, behind the fragrances and glamorous packaging, many personal care and household cleaning products contain synthetic chemicals that may pose risks to our health as well as our environment. Ingredients such as phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, and certain surfactants are commonly used in products like shampoos, cosmetics, surface cleaners, and air fresheners. While these chemicals help improve shelf life, texture, and scent, growing research suggests that repeated exposure – especially over long periods  – may contribute to a range of health concerns.

Some chemicals found in everyday products have been linked to skin irritation, allergies, hormone disruption, respiratory problems, and even long-term chronic and carcinogenic risks. Because these substances are used so frequently, exposure can accumulate through multiple pathways: absorption through the skin, inhalation of fumes or fragrances, and accidental ingestion through residue on surfaces or hands. Children and pets may be particularly vulnerable because their bodies are still developing and they often spend more time in close contact with floors, furniture, and household surfaces.

By creating a toxic-free home we can make our living spaces safer and healthier where the air we breathe, the surfaces we touch, and the products we apply to our bodies support wellbeing rather than compromise it. This doesn’t necessarily mean eliminating all products but rather becoming more aware of, and avoiding certain ingredients. In this Tox-Free Living session, we will look at:
· Some common and potentially dangerous chemicals in everyday personal care and cleaning products
· Possible health risks and the effects of toxic load buildup in our body including hormone disruptions
· Natural, tox-free alternatives both store-bought and homemade using basic household ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon
· How to make informed purchases by reading labels, looking for certifications and plant-based or naturally derived ingredients

Let’s increase our knowledge and take proactive steps to prioritise our health by making wiser choices that reduce potential chemical exposure and cultivate an environment that promotes long-term health and sustainability.
