Join us to consider ‘Being and Nothingness’, as we explore the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre. Sartre remains a leading philosopher, who lived during the mid-20th century through the upheaval and devastation of the Second World War. This talk will focus on some of the most famous aspects of Sartre’s work in existentialism, including concepts of freedom, self-deception, personal responsibility, authenticity, and relations with ‘Others’.
Margaret Penhall-Jones holds a Masters of Philosophy from the University of Adelaide. Her research explores the paradoxical phenomena of self-deception and wilful ignorance. She is now enrolled in the doctoral program in Philosophy at Deakin University, concentrating on existential philosophy, including that of Jean-Paul Sartre. She is exploring the existential approach to authenticity in the rapidly changing facets of knowledge and responsibility that we currently face.
