Philosophy Cafe: Are AIs Conscious?
Some are claiming that AIs like ChatGPT have crossed a threshold: that they have become intelligent, or conscious, or self-aware.
But consciousness, in particular, is notoriously tricky to pin down.
Drawing on work in philosophy and cognitive neuroscience, Jon will shed light on the nature of consciousness and the prospect of conscious AI.
Dr Jon Opie is a philosopher who works on the nature of representation and consciousness in biological systems.
Most recently he has (re)turned to the foundations of physics, research he intends to pursue in suitable caffeine-rich locations around town.
Presented in Partnership with Adelaide University School of Humanities.
